Research Scientist, Institute for Systems Biology

Tomasz Wilmanski, Ph.D.

Tomasz Wilmanski is a research scientist at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle where he studies the gut microbiome using large deeply phenotyped human cohorts. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in philosophy and psychology from Tufts University in 2011. Tomasz then continued his education at Purdue University where he graduated with a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with a concentration in health statistics and a PhD in biochemical and molecular nutrition, both in 2017. Tomasz’s microbiome research spans a wide range of topics including aging, drug-microbiome interactions, and understanding how metabolic products of gut bacteria impact human health. His recent findings have characterized healthy aging patterns within the gut microbiome that predict survival in older age and a machine-learning model that can accurately predict gut microbiome diversity from plasma metabolomics data in humans. As part of a collaborative research team at the Institute for Systems Biology, Tomasz’s work is focused on translation and clinical application of gut microbiome research to promote human health.
